Why TheΣlab?
Students in our lab work on a wide variety of topics, and with almost no exceptions they would be required to work with mathematical modelling and computation. Thus, while our students don’t have to come in with a strong math background, they have to come with commitment and interest in gaining these skills. We combine mathematical models, simulations, and data set analyses to address fundamental and applied questions in ecology.
We work on a wide range of topics in ecology at different scales from individual behaviour to population and ecosystem dynamics. We perform experiments with model organisms in the lab in high-performance tracking platforms, and we also work on long term monitoring studies of Mediterranean seabirds, and benthic organisms along the shores around the world. We also monitor invasive, disease-carrying mosquitoes and their interactions with humans to assess disease risk spreading.
In some of these studies we combine traditional scientific methodologies with a range of citizen science approaches, both targeted to specific communities of interest or to the global population.
We interact a lot with our students and try to give them the best formative and enriching academic experience. About our future research directions, you can have a look on our home page and list of publications.
PhD, MS and Undergraduate students
You can come with your own funding or apply for a Spanish/Catalan grant. These grants are scarce and you will need excellent grading marks. In either case, a previous short internship in our group is highly recommended.
We encourage students to see if they meet the requirements to apply for any of the following scholarships:
Postdoctoral students
We are also open to receive applications for postdoctoral students or to receive scholarships funded externally.
Sabbatical days
The CEAB is also a perfect place for sabbatical stays.
You would be placed in an excellent CSIC research center (Spanish Council for Research) located in a nice and quiet environment. The Costa Brava is a perfect location, 70 km north of Barcelona, surrounded by nice beaches, and at about 150km from the Pyrenees.
